Equine Sports & Rehabilitation Massage

More than a massage.

Every horse deserves to be listened to.

Every horse is different. Massage can support muscular comfort, suppleness and relaxation, whether your horse competes, hacks or enjoys a quieter life.

Why it matters

Why massage is important

Horses use their muscles in everything they do — from grazing and playing to schooling and competing. Muscular tension can develop through everyday activity, changes in workload or compensatory movement.

Thoughtful, appropriately applied massage can support muscular comfort, suppleness and relaxation as part of your horse's overall care.

The benefit

How massage can support your horse

Muscle tension & comfort

Muscles can develop areas of increased tension through exercise, repetitive movement or compensating for discomfort elsewhere. Targeted massage uses different pressures and techniques to help reduce muscular guarding and encourage the tissues to relax.

Movement & flexibility

Muscles and surrounding connective tissues need to move comfortably against one another. By addressing soft-tissue tension and working with the horse's responses, massage may help improve ease of movement and short-term flexibility.

Supporting muscular health & reducing avoidable strain

Muscular tension, fatigue and changes in movement can sometimes indicate that a horse is struggling with the demands placed on its body. Regular massage appointments provide an opportunity to monitor muscular condition, identify changes in sensitivity or tension, and discuss potential concerns before they become more significant.

Combined with appropriate conditioning, workload management, saddle fit and veterinary care, massage can form part of a proactive approach to supporting your horse's musculoskeletal health.

Circulation & tissue health

Massage applies mechanical pressure to soft tissues and can temporarily increase local skin and superficial tissue blood flow. These effects may support tissue comfort, although massage does not replace the body's natural recovery processes.

Nervous system & relaxation

Touch provides sensory information to the nervous system. Calm, appropriately paced massage may encourage relaxation and reduce protective muscle guarding, particularly when the horse feels safe and has time to accept treatment.

Supporting recovery & rehabilitation

Whether a horse is returning to work after time off, recovering from demanding exercise or following a veterinary rehabilitation programme, its muscles may need additional support as activity changes. Appropriately timed massage can help manage muscular tension and guarding, support comfort and provide an opportunity to monitor how the horse responds as its workload gradually increases. For horses recovering from injury, massage is adapted to their stage of healing and used alongside veterinary guidance and a structured rehabilitation plan.

Understanding  your horses treatment

Not all massage is the same

Different techniques serve different purposes. Each session is adapted to your horse rather than following a fixed routine.

Which treatment does my horse need?

You don't need to choose beforehand. I assess your horse's history, muscular condition and responses, then use the techniques most appropriate for them. Often, a session combines different approaches.

RECOGNISING THE SIGNS

Is your horse trying to tell you something?

Sometimes the first signs of discomfort are subtle.

  • Changes in stride or willingness to move

  • Sensitivity during grooming or tacking up

  • Unusual reactions to touch

  • Changes in behaviour or willingness to work

These signs can have several causes. Seek veterinary advice for new, persistent or concerning changes.

My Approach

Not just a massage. An individual treatment.

I take time to understand each horse, assess their responses and adapt treatment to their individual needs.

Some horses welcome touch immediately. Others need patience, reassurance and time to build confidence. I respect their responses throughout the session.

I work with the horse in front of me, not simply through a routine.
